How common are skin lumps in neurofibroma?

A neurofibroma is a growth involving cells around a nerve. It may be a single lump or occur with other skin findings, and some are associated with an inherited condition. The surface can be smooth or slightly folded, while deeper lesions may feel like a soft nodule. Some are painless; others can itch, feel tender, or cause discomfort when pressed. The look and feel do not by themselves establish the diagnosis, because several benign skin and soft-tissue growths can resemble one another.

Keep a simple record of when the lump appeared, where it is, whether it is changing, and whether it affects movement or sensation. Do not puncture, burn, or repeatedly squeeze it. A clinician can inspect the skin and nerves around it and decide whether observation, imaging, or removal is appropriate. If several similar lumps are present, mention any family history or other long-standing skin findings during the appointment.

Seek prompt assessment for a lump that grows quickly, becomes persistently painful, turns unusually hard, develops new numbness or weakness, or changes sharply in texture. Get timely help for ulceration, bleeding, or signs of infection. These changes do not prove a serious cause, but they warrant examination so that nerve involvement and other explanations are considered.
