How common are skin lumps in lipoma?

A lipoma is a collection of fatty tissue under the skin. It often feels soft or doughy, has a smooth outline, and moves a little under gentle pressure. Many lipomas are not painful and grow slowly, although discomfort can occur if one presses on a nearby nerve or lies where clothing or movement causes friction. A lump's feel is only a clue, not a diagnosis. Cysts, enlarged tissue, and other growths can also create a lump, so an examination may be needed.

Measure changes by comparing the lump with a familiar object rather than repeatedly pressing it. Note its location, approximate size, mobility, tenderness, and how long it has been present. Book a clinical review for a new or uncertain lump. The clinician may examine it and, if its features are unclear, recommend imaging or another test. Do not try to drain or remove it yourself; a lipoma has no surface opening to treat safely at home.

Arrange prompt assessment if the lump enlarges noticeably, becomes painful, feels fixed or unusually firm, causes numbness or weakness, or develops skin changes. Seek urgent help for severe pain, marked swelling, fever, or rapidly spreading redness. These signs do not identify one specific condition, but they mean the area should be checked without delay.
