How common are skin lumps in keloid scars?

A keloid is a thickened scar made from extra scar tissue. It may develop after a cut, piercing, burn, injection, or surgery, and it can continue growing beyond the boundary of the original injury. The lump may feel firm, rubbery, tight, itchy, or tender. Colour can range from pink or red to darker than the surrounding skin. A keloid is not contagious, and its appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis because other raised scars and skin growths can look similar.

Notice whether the lump is changing in size, texture, colour, or sensitivity, and record when you first noticed it. Avoid picking, cutting, or repeatedly rubbing the area, since irritation can worsen scar symptoms. Arrange a skin assessment if the diagnosis is uncertain or the lump is growing. A clinician may discuss silicone-based care, injections, pressure treatment, freezing, laser treatment, or removal; the suitable choice depends on the scar and the risk of it returning.

Seek prompt medical advice if a lump grows quickly, bleeds, opens, becomes increasingly painful, feels hot, or produces discharge. Fever or redness spreading into nearby skin can signal infection and needs timely assessment. A new lump without a clear injury, or a lump that feels unusually hard or fixed, also deserves an examination rather than self-treatment.
