An epidermoid cyst is a sac containing keratin, a skin protein. It may be smooth, mobile under the fingers, and connected to a tiny central opening. Many cysts remain quiet, while others become swollen, tender, warm, or red when inflamed or infected. Thick material may leak if the surface opens, sometimes with an unpleasant smell.
