How common is crusting skin in eczema herpeticum?

Eczema herpeticum is a viral skin infection that can develop in skin affected by eczema. It may begin with closely grouped, painful blisters or small punched-out sores. As these areas dry or weep, a crust can form. People may also feel unwell or develop fever.

Crusting by itself does not establish eczema herpeticum; eczema, bacterial infection, and other skin problems can also crust. The reason for urgency is the pattern of a painful, rapidly spreading or blistering rash, especially in someone with eczema, rather than the commonness of crusting.

Arrange urgent same-day medical assessment if eczema herpeticum is suspected. Avoid waiting to see whether a painful blistering rash settles with moisturiser alone. Keep the area clean, do not pick or squeeze lesions, wash hands after touching the skin, and avoid close skin contact or sharing towels until you have medical advice.

Continue only the treatments your clinician has specifically advised while you seek care. If you can do so without delaying assessment, note when the rash began, whether it is spreading, any fever or eye symptoms, and medicines you have used.

Get urgent medical help for rapidly spreading painful blisters or sores, fever, marked illness, facial involvement, or skin changes near the eyes. Eye pain, redness, light sensitivity, or vision changes need emergency assessment. Seek immediate help if a person becomes confused, very drowsy, or has trouble breathing.

Tell the clinician about eczema, cold sores in you or close contacts, the speed of the rash, pain, fever, and any eye symptoms. Ask what treatment is needed, how to protect others from contact with lesions, and exactly which regular eczema medicines to use while recovering.
