How common are skin bumps in lichen planus?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory skin condition that can produce clusters of small, firm, flat-topped bumps. They may look purple, reddish-brown, or darker than nearby skin, depending on skin tone, and often cause significant itching. The wrists, ankles, lower back, and legs are frequent sites, though other areas can be involved. Scratching may create new lesions along lines of injury and can leave temporary or longer-lasting colour changes.

Keep nails short and use fragrance-free moisturiser to reduce dryness and scratching. Cool compresses and loose clothing may make itching easier to tolerate. Avoid picking or applying strong steroid, bleaching, or herbal products without guidance. A clinician may confirm the diagnosis and discuss anti-inflammatory treatment; mouth sores, scalp changes, or nail involvement should be mentioned because they can alter the assessment.

Book a medical review for a new persistent cluster, severe itch, spreading lesions, or changes that do not fit your usual pattern. Seek prompt care for painful mouth or genital sores, difficulty eating, eye symptoms, extensive blistering, or signs of infection such as increasing warmth, swelling, and drainage.

Ask whether the bumps are consistent with lichen planus, whether testing is needed, and which treatment can control itch without thinning sensitive skin. Share any mouth, genital, scalp, nail, or eye symptoms and list products or medicines started before the rash.
