How common are skin bumps in folliculitis?

Folliculitis is inflammation of a hair follicle. Friction, shaving, tight clothing, sweat, occlusive products, and bacteria or yeast can all play a role. The bumps may occur on areas such as the scalp, beard region, thighs, buttocks, chest, or back. Similar-looking spots can have other causes, including acne or an allergic reaction, so persistence and distribution matter.

Clean the area gently, pat it dry, and pause shaving, waxing, or any activity that repeatedly rubs the skin until it settles. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change out of sweaty garments. Avoid squeezing the bumps or sharing razors and towels. If episodes recur, a clinician can assess whether the trigger is bacterial, yeast-related, mechanical, or linked to a medication or product.

Arrange an examination if the bumps keep returning, spread, form painful deep lumps, or leave scars or hair loss. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or feeling unwell. A clinician may need to look for a deeper infection or choose a targeted treatment rather than treating every follicle problem the same way.

Ask whether the bumps are centred on follicles, what trigger is most likely, and whether a swab or other assessment is useful. Discuss safe shaving practices, suitable washes, and what to do if the problem returns after exercise, hair removal, or a new product.
