How common are skin blisters in dyshidrotic eczema?

Dyshidrotic eczema, also called pompholyx, commonly starts with deep-seated vesicles that can appear in clusters. The skin may feel intensely itchy or prickly before the bumps become visible. As the blisters dry, they can peel, crack, and leave tender skin behind. Flares may affect one or both hands, the feet, or both areas.

Blisters can also occur with contact dermatitis, fungal infections, viral illnesses, burns, or other skin conditions. Their presence alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may consider the location, itch, scaling, exposures, and the rest of the examination when making a diagnosis.

Keep the area cool and protect it from rubbing. Wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser soon afterwards and repeat when the skin feels dry. Wear breathable gloves for wet work and use protective clothing when cleaning; sweat, detergents, and frequent water exposure can aggravate the hands.

Do not deliberately puncture the blisters. Open skin is easier to irritate and can allow bacteria to enter. A healthcare professional can recommend treatment for inflammation or itch, especially when the flare interferes with sleep, walking, or using your hands.

Arrange an assessment if the blisters are spreading, keep returning, or have not settled with gentle skin care. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, yellow crusting, red streaks, or fever, which can signal infection. Get urgent help for rapidly worsening blistering, extensive peeling, facial or eye involvement, or trouble breathing.
