How common are skin blisters in chickenpox?

Chickenpox commonly produces crops of spots that change into itchy, fluid-filled blisters and then scab. New spots may appear while older ones are healing, so the rash can show several stages at once. It often begins on the chest, back, or face before spreading, although patterns vary.

A blistering rash is not specific to chickenpox. Other infections and skin reactions can resemble it, so fever, exposure history, vaccination history, and the rash pattern help a clinician decide what is happening.

Keep fingernails short, use cool baths or compresses, and choose loose clothing to reduce rubbing. Avoid scratching and do not share towels, clothing, or close contact with people who could become seriously ill from chickenpox.

Stay away from school, work, or group settings while new spots are appearing and until the blisters have crusted, following local medical advice. Contact a clinician early if the person is pregnant, immunocompromised, very young, or taking medicines that affect immunity, because treatment decisions may be time-sensitive.

Seek prompt medical help for breathing difficulty, unusual drowsiness, severe headache, repeated vomiting, difficulty walking, or a rash near the eyes. Contact a clinician for blisters that become increasingly red, hot, swollen, painful, or filled with pus, as these changes can indicate a bacterial infection.

Ask whether the rash is consistent with chickenpox, when normal activities can resume, and whether antiviral treatment is appropriate. Also ask how to protect household members who are pregnant, immunocompromised, or not immune.
