How common is shoulder weakness in rotator cuff tear?

Short answer
Shoulder weakness is a very common presentation of rotator cuff tear and may make lifting or rotating the arm difficult.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the weakness may indicate
The rotator cuff is a group of tendons that helps centre and move the shoulder joint. A tear can reduce the force available for lifting the arm, reaching overhead, or rotating it outward. Pain may inhibit effort as well, making the arm feel less reliable during everyday tasks. Some tears follow a clear injury, while others develop with gradual changes and are noticed when ordinary movements become harder.
Weakness alone cannot confirm a rotator cuff tear. A shoulder examination compares strength and movement, checks for pain-limited effort, and considers neck symptoms or other joint problems.
Protecting the shoulder while you arrange care
Avoid repeated overhead work, heavy loads, and movements that cause sharp pain. Keep the elbow and shoulder moving gently within a comfortable range unless you have been given different injury instructions. Do not repeatedly test strength against resistance. A physiotherapist can guide mobility, then introduce strengthening when the tendon and symptoms allow. Seek an assessment if weakness is limiting dressing, reaching, work, or sleep, especially after a fall or sudden pull.
When prompt care matters
After an injury, seek prompt assessment if you suddenly cannot raise the arm, the shoulder is deformed, or pain and swelling are severe. Urgent care is also appropriate for a hot red joint with fever, new numbness, a cold or pale hand, or rapidly worsening weakness. Persistent or gradually increasing weakness deserves a routine clinical review even without a dramatic injury.
Questions to discuss
Ask whether the weakness is pain-related or reflects tendon damage, whether imaging would clarify the finding, which activities are safe, and how rehabilitation will be progressed without overloading the shoulder.

Questions people ask
Does shoulder weakness always mean a rotator cuff tear?
No. Weakness can arise from pain, nerve irritation, or other shoulder conditions, so examination is needed.
Can I keep moving with a suspected tear?
Gentle comfortable movement is often reasonable, but avoid painful loading and get advice about strengthening.
