Short answer

Shoulder Popping and Clicking is a common presentation of Scapular Dyskinesis, particularly when the shoulder blade moves unevenly during arm movement.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How scapular movement relates

The shoulder blade should glide and rotate in coordination with the upper arm. With scapular dyskinesis, that timing or positioning can change. The altered motion may produce a click, snap, or rubbing sensation as the arm lifts, lowers, or reaches forward. It may occur with fatigue, overhead work, sport, or repeated pushing and pulling.

Sound alone does not show how serious the problem is. Pain, weakness, visible winging, reduced control, or a feeling that the shoulder is catching gives a clinician more useful information than the noise itself.

What may help

Notice which actions trigger the sound and whether changing posture or slowing the movement changes it. Avoid repeatedly forcing the shoulder through a painful click. Physiotherapy may focus on shoulder-blade control, upper-back movement, and gradual strengthening of the muscles that guide the blade. A measured programme is preferable to suddenly adding heavy overhead exercise.

When to seek care

Book an assessment when popping is painful, follows an injury, limits work or sport, or occurs with weakness or a visibly prominent shoulder blade. Seek urgent care after a major injury if the arm looks out of place, cannot be moved, or becomes numb, cold, or unusually weak.

Questions for your doctor

Does my shoulder-blade motion suggest scapular dyskinesis? Which exercises should I begin or avoid? Could pain or weakness point to another shoulder condition?

Questions people ask

Is painless clicking always a problem?

Not necessarily. Painless sound can occur without a serious injury, but persistent or changing symptoms deserve an assessment.

Can physiotherapy help?

It can help many people improve shoulder-blade control through tailored mobility and strengthening exercises.
