How common is shoulder pain in cervical radiculopathy?

Cervical radiculopathy begins in the neck, but the affected nerve follows a pathway into the upper limb. Pain may feel sharp, burning, aching, or electric, and neck movement can change its intensity. The shoulder may hurt even when the shoulder joint itself is not the main source. Symptoms can affect one side and may travel below the shoulder.

Arrange a clinical assessment if pain persists, spreads, or limits sleep, work, or arm use. A clinician may check neck movement, reflexes, sensation, and strength to distinguish nerve-related pain from a shoulder problem. Until assessed, keep gently moving within comfort, vary positions, and avoid activities that clearly increase arm symptoms. Do not force stretches that reproduce tingling or weakness.

Seek urgent medical care for new or worsening arm weakness, trouble walking, loss of hand coordination, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Get prompt help after a significant injury, or when neck and shoulder pain occurs with fever, severe headache, chest discomfort, or unexplained illness.
