People may notice a dry cough, chest heaviness, discomfort on one side, or difficulty lying flat. Breathlessness can reflect the amount and position of fluid, how quickly it formed, and the condition of the lungs. Clinicians may examine the chest and use imaging; removing a sample can help determine what the fluid contains and guide management.

Report a change in breathing to the oncology or respiratory team, especially if walking, sleeping, or speaking becomes harder. Rest upright, pace activities, and use prescribed medicines or oxygen as instructed. Management may include treating the underlying cancer, draining fluid, or procedures intended to reduce repeated collection. The right option depends on symptoms, general health, and scan findings.

Seek emergency care for sudden severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, or inability to speak normally. A rapid increase in symptoms, fever, or a new cough should be reported promptly because infection, a clot, or another complication may need immediate treatment.
