How common is shortness of breath in bronchiectasis?

Bronchiectasis involves widened airways that can hold mucus, making it harder to clear secretions and increasing the chance of chest infections. Along with breathlessness, people may have a frequent cough, bring up mucus, wheeze or feel tired. Symptoms may vary from day to day and can become worse when mucus changes in amount, thickness or colour. Breathlessness is not unique to bronchiectasis, so a new or different pattern should be assessed.

Continue your prescribed airway-clearance routine and inhaled medicines as directed. Drink fluids if you are able to do so and remain upright during breathing exercises or coughing. Keep a record of sputum changes, fever, reduced activity tolerance and worsening breathlessness. Contact your usual clinician promptly if these changes suggest a flare-up, as you may need an assessment and treatment plan.

Call emergency services if breathing difficulty is severe, rapidly worsening, or accompanied by blue or grey lips, confusion, chest pain, fainting or coughing up more than small streaks of blood. Seek same-day medical advice for fever with worsening cough, a major change in mucus, or breathlessness that is stopping usual activities.

Ask how to recognise your personal flare-up signs, whether your airway-clearance technique is effective, and when a sputum sample is useful. Discuss vaccination, exercise and a plan for episodes of increased cough or breathlessness.
