How common is shortness of breath in acute bronchitis?

Acute bronchitis inflames the larger airways, often after a viral illness. Swelling, mucus and repeated coughing can make air movement feel harder. Breathlessness may be more noticeable when walking, climbing stairs or lying down, and wheezing can occur. Tiredness and chest discomfort from coughing may add to the sensation.

Breathlessness has many causes, including asthma, pneumonia, heart problems and a blood clot. A diagnosis of acute bronchitis should take account of the whole illness, including fever, chest pain, oxygen level and examination findings. A cough with breathlessness that is worsening deserves review.

Rest, drink fluids if you can do so safely, avoid cigarette smoke and use a humidified environment if it eases irritation. Sit upright during coughing bouts and take prescribed inhalers exactly as directed. Do not start leftover antibiotics; many episodes are not helped by them, and a clinician can decide whether another treatment is appropriate.

Track whether breathing is improving, stable or worsening, and mention any wheeze, chest pain or fever at an appointment. People with asthma, chronic lung disease, older age or reduced immunity may need earlier review.

Seek emergency care for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, coughing blood or chest pain that is severe or persistent. Arrange prompt medical review for breathlessness at rest, a high or persistent fever, dehydration, or symptoms that are not settling.

Ask whether your breathing needs an oxygen check or chest examination, whether an inhaler is suitable, and which symptoms would suggest pneumonia or another problem. Ask how long your cough may remain and when to return if it changes.
