How common is seizure in alcohol use disorder?

Alcohol can alter brain activity. In a person whose body has adapted to regular heavy drinking, a sudden reduction or stop can lead to withdrawal and may trigger a seizure. A seizure can also have other causes, including head injury, low blood sugar, infections, medicines, or epilepsy. It should never be assumed that alcohol use disorder is the explanation without medical assessment.

Call emergency services for a seizure. Protect the person from nearby hazards, cushion their head if possible, loosen tight clothing around the neck, and place them on their side once movements stop. Do not hold them down, put anything in their mouth, or give food, drink, or medication until they are fully awake and able to swallow. Stay with them and note what you observed for the clinical team.

A first seizure, repeated seizures, a seizure with injury, breathing difficulty, pregnancy, diabetes, or failure to regain usual awareness requires emergency care. If you drink regularly and want to cut down or stop, speak to a clinician before doing so; supervised support can reduce withdrawal risks. Do not try to manage severe withdrawal symptoms alone.

Ask what may have caused the seizure, whether withdrawal is a concern, and what support is available for reducing alcohol safely. Share details of drinking pattern, the last drink, medicines, prior seizures, injuries, and any witnessed features such as staring, shaking, or confusion afterward.
