How common is runny nose in allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis develops when the nose reacts to a substance such as pollen, mould, animal dander, or indoor dust allergens. The lining becomes irritated and releases extra watery mucus. Symptoms can start soon after exposure and may continue while the trigger remains around you. Runny nose can therefore be prominent indoors, outdoors, or during a particular season. Its presence alone cannot identify the trigger or confirm the diagnosis, because infections and other nasal conditions can also cause it.

Notice where and when the dripping begins, including after cleaning, entering a garden, or being near animals. Reduce contact with a suspected trigger when practical, wash your face after outdoor exposure, and keep bedding clean. Saline nasal rinsing may help remove mucus and irritants; use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water as directed. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether an antihistamine or nasal spray is suitable, especially if you have other conditions or take regular medicines.

Arrange an assessment if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, interfere with work, or do not improve with sensible trigger avoidance. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly spreading itchy rash. A clinician can distinguish allergy from infection and check whether asthma or another problem is contributing.
