How common is ringing in the ears in earwax buildup?

Earwax normally protects the ear canal, but it can collect and block the passage of sound. A blockage may cause muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness, discomfort or ringing. The ringing may be noticed more in quiet settings because there is less outside sound to mask it. Ringing in the ears does not establish that wax is present; sound exposure, ear conditions, medicines and hearing changes are among other possible contributors.

A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether wax-softening drops are suitable and whether the ear needs to be examined. Do not put cotton buds, hairpins or other objects into the ear canal, as they can push wax deeper or injure the ear. Avoid trying to remove wax yourself if you have ear pain, discharge, a known eardrum hole, previous ear surgery or a current ear infection. If hearing remains muffled after wax is addressed, arrange a review.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, a head injury, or ringing that pulses with your heartbeat. Contact a clinician promptly for ear discharge, significant pain, fever, or ringing affecting only one ear that persists. These symptoms should be assessed rather than assumed to be caused by wax.
