How common is reduced range of motion in Dupuytren's contracture?

The change often begins as a firm nodule or cord in the palm. Over time, the ring or little finger may remain partly bent, making it harder to place the hand flat on a table, put on gloves, wash the face, or grip certain objects. The amount of restriction can differ between hands and can progress at different speeds. Reduced finger extension can also alter how force is shared across the hand, causing fatigue during daily tasks.

Notice which finger is affected and whether the bend is changing. A hand specialist or physiotherapist can measure extension and discuss observation, splinting in selected situations, injection-based treatment, or a procedure when function is significantly affected. Gentle movement can maintain available motion, but forceful stretching or unsupervised devices may irritate the hand. Protect the skin and use task adaptations if gripping becomes uncomfortable.

Book an assessment when a palm lump, cord, or bent finger affects work, hygiene, dressing, or everyday grip. Earlier review is useful if the finger is becoming less straight or several fingers are involved. Seek prompt care for marked swelling, redness, warmth, severe pain, a sudden loss of movement, or a hand injury that changes function.
