How common is red eye in stye?

A stye is a tender lump near the edge of an eyelid, often arising around an eyelash follicle or oil gland. The surrounding lid may become swollen and sore. Redness can be limited to the eyelid or can make the white of the eye look irritated as well. A small yellow point may appear as the lump develops.

The location of the lump matters. A stye is typically close to the lash line, whereas deeper painless eyelid lumps and widespread eye redness may need a different assessment. Redness does not on its own establish the cause.

Place a clean warm compress over the closed eyelid for several minutes, then repeat as comfortable through the day. This can encourage natural drainage. Keep the hands and eyelid area clean, and avoid squeezing, puncturing, or trying to pop the lump. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses while the lid is sore or the eye is red.

Use a fresh cloth each time and avoid sharing face towels. If there is discharge, clean it away gently with clean water rather than rubbing the eye.

Seek urgent care if vision changes, pain occurs inside the eye, the redness spreads rapidly, the eyelid becomes very swollen, or you feel feverish and unwell. Arrange an appointment if the lump persists, repeatedly returns, interferes with opening the eye, or if redness and discomfort are not improving. A clinician can examine the eyelid and eye surface for another problem.

Ask whether the lump is a stye or another eyelid condition, whether eyelid hygiene may help prevent recurrence, and when it is safe to resume contact lenses or makeup. Mention any repeated lid lumps, eye disease, or medicines that affect your immune system.
