How common is red bumps on arms in keratosis pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris occurs when keratin, a skin protein, plugs hair follicles. The upper arms are a classic location, and the skin may feel rough like fine sandpaper. Bumps can be skin-coloured, pink, or red, and they are often more noticeable when the skin is dry. Some people have mild itch, while others mainly notice texture.

This pattern is generally different from folliculitis: keratosis pilaris usually produces many small, uniform rough bumps rather than isolated tender spots or pus-filled lesions. Still, overlapping irritation can occur, and an examination can clarify an uncertain rash.

Use a gentle cleanser and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser soon after bathing. Products containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid may smooth plugged follicles for some people; introduce one active product at a time and stop if the skin burns or becomes very irritated. Avoid harsh scrubbing, picking, and very hot water, which can increase redness without removing the underlying plugs.

See a clinician if the bumps become painful, rapidly change, ooze, form crusts, or are accompanied by marked itch or swelling. Review is also worthwhile when the appearance is new, widespread, or not improving with consistent gentle moisturising, because other rashes can resemble keratosis pilaris.
