How common is rash with fever in Stevens-Johnson syndrome?

Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a serious skin and mucous-membrane reaction, often associated with a recently started medicine, although infections and other triggers may also be considered. Fever, tiredness, sore throat, or burning eyes can come before or occur alongside skin changes. The rash may start as red or dusky patches and then become tender, blistered, or peel. Involvement of moist linings can cause painful sores in the mouth, eyes, nose, or genital area. These features help clinicians distinguish a dangerous reaction from less serious rashes; the symptom combination is not a diagnosis by itself.

If a new rash and fever develop together, seek same-day medical assessment, particularly after starting or changing a medicine. Bring the medicine packets or a list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements, including when each was started. Do not take another dose of a suspected medicine unless a clinician who knows the situation advises you. Do not apply new creams or use home treatments that could obscure the rash. Keep hydrated if swallowing is comfortable, and avoid contact with others if an infectious cause has not been excluded.

Go to an emergency department immediately for a rapidly spreading or painful rash, blisters, skin peeling, purple or dusky areas, severe weakness, fainting, trouble breathing, or trouble swallowing. Urgent assessment is also needed for eye pain or redness, light sensitivity, vision changes, or sores in the mouth or genital area. Stevens-Johnson syndrome can worsen quickly and may require hospital-based monitoring, wound care, fluids, and specialist treatment.
