How common is rash with fever in drug rash?

A drug rash may appear after starting a medicine, changing its dose, or sometimes after continued use. It can be flat or raised, itchy, and widespread. Fever may accompany the immune response. The timing of every prescription, over-the-counter medicine, supplement, and recent infection helps a clinician judge whether a reaction is possible.

Not every rash after taking a medicine is caused by that medicine, and stopping essential treatment without advice can be unsafe. A clinician may need to distinguish a mild eruption from a serious reaction by examining the skin and mouth, eyes, and other symptoms.

Contact the prescribing clinician or an urgent care service promptly and state the medicine name, dose, start date, and time the rash and fever began. Photograph changes if practical. Do not restart a suspected medicine or take leftover treatment unless a clinician tells you to. Keep the packaging available, and ask how the reaction should be recorded for future care.

Seek emergency care for swelling of the lips or tongue, wheezing, faintness, blistering or peeling skin, painful skin, sores in the mouth or genitals, eye pain, facial swelling, confusion, or difficulty swallowing or breathing. Fever with a rapidly spreading rash deserves urgent assessment even when the skin initially looks mild.
