How common is rash with fever in chickenpox?

Chickenpox often begins with fever, tiredness, reduced appetite, or headache, followed by itchy spots. The rash can start on the chest, back, or face and then spread. Spots may become fluid-filled blisters before crusting, and several stages can be present at the same time.

A fever with a widespread itchy rash is not enough to confirm chickenpox. Other infections and medicine reactions can look similar. Vaccination history, exposure to someone with chickenpox, and the rash's progression help a clinician assess the cause.

Contact a clinician for advice, particularly for a baby, pregnant person, adult, or anyone with a weakened immune system. Keep the person away from people who could become seriously ill until a clinician confirms when normal contact is safe.
