How common is rash with fever in cellulitis?

Cellulitis is an infection in deeper layers of skin and nearby tissue. The affected area often becomes red, warm, swollen, tender, and larger over time. Fever, chills, or feeling generally unwell can occur as the body responds. A rash with fever can also have other causes, so its appearance, speed of change, location, and any wound or bite are useful clues.

Cellulitis commonly affects one area, such as a lower leg, arm, or face, rather than producing identical spots across the body. Redness on darker skin may look brown, purple, or gray instead of bright red.

Arrange a same-day clinical assessment for a new rash with fever, especially when the skin is hot, painful, swollen, or expanding. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or scratching it, and remove rings or tight items near swelling. Note when the rash began, mark its edge only if a clinician advises it, and bring a list of medicines and recent injuries, bites, injections, or skin breaks.

Seek emergency help for rapidly worsening pain or swelling, red streaks, confusion, faintness, trouble breathing, a very ill appearance, skin turning dusky or blistering, or involvement around the eye. Do not wait for a rash to become extensive when fever is accompanied by severe pain or fast progression.

Ask whether the findings fit cellulitis or another rash, whether a wound or abscess needs attention, which treatment plan is appropriate, and what change should trigger reassessment.
