How common is persistent indigestion in Barrett's oesophagus?

Barrett's oesophagus involves changes to the lining of the oesophagus, often in a setting where reflux has irritated that lining over time. Ongoing heartburn, a burning feeling behind the breastbone, sour fluid coming up into the mouth, or discomfort after meals can be described as persistent indigestion. Some people with Barrett's oesophagus have few noticeable symptoms, while indigestion can also occur without Barrett's oesophagus.

A clinician looks at the duration and pattern of symptoms, swallowing difficulties, medicines and other digestive symptoms to decide whether tests such as endoscopy are appropriate.

Make a non-urgent appointment if indigestion continues, returns frequently, disrupts sleep or is no longer responding to measures that previously helped.
