How common is persistent fatigue in high calcium in cancer?

Calcium helps nerves, muscles and the heart work normally. When the calcium level rises, body systems may not work as smoothly, leaving a person weak, sleepy or unable to concentrate. Thirst, constipation, nausea, reduced appetite, more frequent urination and confusion can occur alongside tiredness. Fatigue can also be related to cancer, treatment, poor sleep, infection, anaemia, reduced food or fluid intake, or medicines. A blood test is needed to identify whether calcium is involved.

Tell your oncology team about a new change in energy, especially if rest is no longer helping. Describe when it started, whether it is worsening, and any changes in drinking, urination, bowel habits, thinking or balance. Until you have been advised otherwise, follow your team’s guidance on fluids and medicines. Do not start supplements or change prescribed treatment because of fatigue without checking with the clinician managing your cancer care.

Contact your cancer team promptly if fatigue is suddenly much worse or comes with vomiting, marked weakness, new confusion, unusual drowsiness, difficulty walking, or trouble keeping fluids down. Seek emergency care for fainting, severe confusion, chest symptoms, or if someone is difficult to wake. These symptoms need prompt assessment, whatever the cause.

You could ask whether your symptoms suggest a calcium imbalance, which blood tests are useful, and how your current medicines or supplements may affect calcium. Ask what changes should prompt an urgent call and who to contact outside clinic hours.
