How common is persistent cough in mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma affecting the lining around the lungs can irritate nearby tissues or change how the lungs expand, which may lead to a cough. The cough can occur with breathlessness, chest or shoulder discomfort, fatigue, fever, or a feeling of pressure in the chest. Respiratory infections, asthma, reflux, smoking-related irritation, allergies, and medicines can also produce a lasting cough. A cough on its own cannot establish the reason, so changes over time and associated symptoms are important.

Contact a clinician if a cough persists, gets worse, or is different from your usual cough. Explain whether it is dry or brings up mucus, what triggers it, and whether activity or lying down makes it worse. Mention any breathlessness, chest discomfort, recent infections, past work involving dust exposure, smoking history, and current medicines.
