How common is persistent abdominal pain in liver cancer?

Pain may be felt in the upper right abdomen, under the ribs, or as pressure and fullness rather than a sharp sensation. It can become more noticeable with movement, eating, or lying in a particular position. In liver cancer, discomfort can arise when changes in the liver stretch its outer covering or press on nearby structures.

The same symptom can also occur with digestive, gallbladder, muscle, or liver problems that are not cancer. The wording “common presentation” describes people who have liver cancer; it does not diagnose liver cancer in someone who has abdominal pain.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the pain persists, returns repeatedly, or is changing your appetite, sleep, or daily activities. Note where it is located, when it started, whether it is constant or intermittent, and what seems to ease or worsen it. A clinician may examine your abdomen and decide whether blood tests or imaging are appropriate.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, vomiting that prevents fluids, black stools, vomiting blood, yellowing of the eyes or skin, fever with worsening pain, or a rapidly swollen abdomen. These warning signs need prompt assessment regardless of the cause.
