How common is persistent abdominal pain in cancer pain?

Pain during cancer can come from a tumour pressing on tissue or nerves, a blockage or inflammation, treatment effects, or another health problem occurring at the same time. It may feel cramping, burning, sharp, dull, or like pressure, and it can change through the day. A new pain should not automatically be attributed to cancer: constipation, infection, medication effects, and other treatable causes also need consideration.

Tell your oncology team about new pain or pain that is no longer controlled. Describe the site, intensity, timing, triggers, and effect on sleep, eating, movement, and mood. Bring a list of medicines, including non-prescription products. The team can check for a cause needing treatment and may adjust pain relief, bowel care, or supportive care according to your situation.

Contact the urgent oncology line or seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly escalating pain, repeated vomiting, new confusion, fever, a distended abdomen, new weakness, or blood in vomit or stool. Do not wait for a routine appointment when pain is accompanied by these warning signs.

Ask what may be causing the pain, whether a scan or examination is needed, how to use prescribed relief safely, and what to do if it breaks through between doses. You can also ask about specialist pain or supportive-care services.
