How common are stopped periods in Imperforate Hymen?

Imperforate Hymen is usually present from birth and may become noticeable when menstrual periods are expected but do not appear. A person may have monthly lower-abdominal or pelvic pain, pressure, back discomfort, difficulty passing urine, or a bulging membrane at the vaginal opening. The timing and examination findings help distinguish it from hormonal causes of stopped periods.

Arrange a gynaecology assessment if periods have not started and recurring pelvic pain or pressure is present. A clinician may perform an external examination and use ultrasound to see whether blood has collected behind the membrane. If the opening is blocked, a minor procedure can create a passage for drainage and relieve the obstruction.

Seek urgent care for severe pelvic pain, vomiting, inability to pass urine, fever, faintness, or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling. These signs may indicate significant pressure or another acute problem. Avoid trying to open the membrane yourself, as this can cause injury or infection.

Ask whether the examination suggests an obstructed hymen, whether ultrasound is needed, and how the procedure would allow blood to drain. Discuss pain relief, aftercare, expected return of periods, and when normal activities can resume.
