How common is pain during sex in vulvodynia?

Vulvodynia is ongoing vulvar pain without one single visible explanation. Pain may be provoked by touch, penetration, tight clothing, sitting, or inserting a tampon, or it may occur without contact. People describe burning, rawness, stinging, throbbing, or tenderness. The discomfort can vary from day to day. A careful assessment is useful because infections, skin conditions, pelvic floor tension, and hormonal changes can cause similar symptoms or coexist with vulvodynia.

Arrange a gynaecology review for pain that lasts or keeps returning. The clinician may examine the skin gently, map tender areas, and discuss medicines, pelvic floor physiotherapy, skin care, or pain-focused counselling. Avoid fragranced washes and products that sting, choose breathable clothing, and use a plain lubricant if friction contributes. During intimacy, agree on a pace and activities that do not trigger pain; stopping is appropriate whenever discomfort starts.

Seek prompt care for new sores, blisters, marked swelling, fever, unusual discharge, bleeding, or rapidly worsening pain. Arrange assessment if vulvar pain is interfering with sleep, movement, sex, or urination. These changes should not be attributed to vulvodynia without checking for an infection, skin problem, or another cause.
