Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy affects nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Numbness, tingling, burning, altered temperature sense, or an electric feeling may begin in the toes or fingers and extend upward. Some people notice clumsiness, weakness, balance trouble, or difficulty fastening clothes. Symptoms can appear during treatment or afterward, and their pattern can change. Other conditions can cause similar sensations, so the oncology team should assess new or changing symptoms.

Tell the oncology team when symptoms began, where they occur, and whether they affect walking, gripping, sleep, or daily tasks. The team may review medicines, examine sensation and strength, and adjust the treatment plan when appropriate. Reduce injury risk by checking bath water with an unaffected area, wearing supportive shoes, clearing trip hazards, using handrails, and protecting numb hands from heat, cold, and sharp objects.

Contact the treatment team promptly if numbness is spreading, balance is worsening, objects are being dropped, or weakness affects walking or hand use. Seek urgent help for sudden one-sided weakness, new trouble speaking, severe breathing difficulty, or an injury that cannot be felt properly. Do not wait for the next treatment visit if symptoms are rapidly changing.
