How common is numbness and tingling in hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism may slow body processes and cause symptoms such as tiredness, feeling cold, constipation, dry skin, weight change, and muscle aches. Tingling can occur when swelling or changes around a nerve create pressure, often noticed in the hands or feet. The same sensation can also result from nerve compression, diabetes, vitamin problems, medicine effects, or other conditions. It is therefore a reason to assess the full pattern, not a way to diagnose thyroid disease by itself.

If you have diagnosed hypothyroidism, take thyroid medicine exactly as prescribed and do not alter the dose without clinical advice. Make a note of which areas are affected, whether symptoms occur at night, and whether you also have weakness, pain, or hand clumsiness. A clinician may review thyroid blood tests, medicine timing, and other causes of nerve symptoms. Protect areas with reduced sensation from heat, cuts, or prolonged pressure.

Get emergency help for sudden one-sided numbness or weakness, difficulty speaking, facial drooping, severe dizziness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Seek timely medical advice when tingling persists, spreads, wakes you from sleep, or affects grip, walking, or daily activities. Prompt review is also sensible if symptoms begin after a medicine change.

Ask whether your thyroid treatment and blood tests are up to date, whether the pattern suggests a compressed nerve, and what symptoms should prompt earlier review. Bring a list of all medicines and supplements, including the time you take thyroid medicine.
