How common is nosebleed in allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis causes symptoms such as sneezing, an itchy or blocked nose, watery discharge and rubbing. Repeated rubbing or forceful blowing can break small vessels near the front of the nasal septum. Dry indoor air, air conditioning, smoke and some nasal treatments may add irritation.

A nosebleed does not identify allergic rhinitis on its own. Colds, dry mucosa, injury, nose picking, medicines that affect clotting and less common nasal problems can also cause bleeding. The pattern of nasal itch and sneezing, triggers, duration and examination help separate these possibilities.

Sit upright, lean slightly forward and pinch the soft part of the nose continuously until the bleeding settles. Avoid tilting the head back, forceful blowing and picking afterward. Reduce rubbing, manage allergy triggers, and ask a pharmacist or clinician about suitable saline care or allergy treatment if episodes recur. Use nasal sprays exactly as directed.

Get urgent help if bleeding is heavy, follows a significant injury, causes weakness or breathing difficulty, or does not stop after sustained pressure. Arrange a medical review for frequent episodes, bleeding from both sides, easy bruising, or use of anticoagulant medicine. A clinician can examine the nose and review medicines.
