How common is nipple discharge in intraductal papilloma?

Nipple Discharge is a common presentation of Intraductal Papilloma, a small growth inside a milk duct. Discharge may be clear or blood-stained and can occur without pressing the nipple.

An intraductal papilloma can irritate the lining of a milk duct and release fluid through the nipple. It may be located near the nipple or farther inside the breast. Some people notice a small lump or tenderness, while others notice discharge alone.

The discharge pattern cannot identify a papilloma by itself. Other duct conditions, hormonal changes, infection, and breast cancer can also cause discharge. A clinician may use an examination and breast imaging, and sometimes recommend a tissue sample to clarify the diagnosis.

Arrange a breast assessment for new discharge, particularly when it is spontaneous, one-sided, clear, or blood-stained. Write down when it occurs and whether it comes from one opening or several. Do not repeatedly squeeze the nipple to test it, as stimulation can produce additional fluid.

Seek prompt medical review if discharge is blood-stained or clear and comes from one nipple, or if you find a new lump, nipple inversion, skin dimpling, redness, fever, or worsening pain. These findings need examination because different causes require different management.
