How common is nipple discharge in breast cancer?

Nipple Discharge is a common presentation of Breast Cancer, although discharge can also have benign causes. The pattern matters: spontaneous discharge, discharge from one breast, or blood-stained fluid deserves clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Breast cancer may affect a milk duct and cause fluid to appear at the nipple. Nipple discharge may occur with other breast changes, such as a new lump, nipple turning inward, skin dimpling, or a change in breast shape. These signs do not identify the cause by themselves; a clinician may need an examination and breast imaging, with a sample of tissue or fluid in some situations.

Discharge related to pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormone changes, medicines, infection, or non-cancerous duct problems is also possible. The colour alone cannot confirm whether a cause is serious.

Arrange an appointment with a doctor or breast clinic if discharge is new, keeps returning, or happens without squeezing the nipple. Note whether it comes from one or both breasts, whether it is spontaneous, its colour, and any lump or skin change. Avoid repeatedly expressing the nipple, because stimulation can prolong discharge and make the pattern harder to judge.

Seek prompt medical assessment for blood-stained discharge, clear discharge from one nipple, a new breast or armpit lump, skin puckering, nipple inversion, redness with fever, or rapidly worsening breast pain or swelling. These features call for examination because they can signal a condition that needs timely treatment.
