How common is pain that wakes you at night in septic arthritis?

Septic arthritis is an infection inside a joint. Inflammation can make the joint painful at rest, and discomfort may interrupt sleep rather than appearing only during movement. The joint may also feel swollen, warm, stiff, or difficult to use. Fever, chills, feeling unwell, or rapid worsening can occur, but their absence does not safely rule out a joint infection.

Night-waking pain is not specific to septic arthritis. Other joint, bone, tendon, or nerve problems can disturb sleep, so the symptom alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician weighs the speed of onset, joint appearance, temperature, movement, recent injury, skin infection, procedure, or injection, and other health factors.

If a joint has become suddenly painful, swollen, warm, or hard to move, arrange same-day medical assessment. Avoid forcing the joint through painful movement or placing weight on it. Note when the pain began, whether it wakes you, any fever or chills, and recent wounds, infections, injections, or surgery. Do not rely on home treatment to explain away rapidly increasing symptoms.

Seek urgent care now for severe or rapidly increasing joint pain, a hot swollen joint, inability to use the limb, fever with shaking chills, confusion, faintness, or marked weakness. Infection can damage a joint and may spread, so prompt examination matters. Assessment may include an examination, blood tests, and testing fluid drawn from the joint.
