Pain That Wakes You at Night is a common presentation of Osteomyelitis. Infection and inflammation within or around bone can cause a deep, persistent ache that continues during rest. The pain may be accompanied by local tenderness and can occur with either a recent infection or a longer-standing bone infection.

Osteomyelitis may cause warmth, swelling, redness, reduced use of a nearby joint, or discharge from a wound. Fever and chills can occur, although their absence does not rule out infection. A clinician may consider the skin, circulation, nerves, recent procedures or injuries, and health conditions that affect healing.

Arrange medical review promptly for persistent deep bone pain, especially near a wound, ulcer, surgical site, or implanted material. Keep any wound clean and covered as advised, and do not squeeze drainage or take leftover antibiotics. Assessment may include examination, blood tests, and imaging, with treatment selected for the suspected source.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever with shaking chills, confusion, faintness, spreading redness, increasing swelling, or new weakness or numbness. Emergency assessment is appropriate if you feel very unwell or cannot safely use the affected limb.
