How common is new lump or swelling in vulvar cancer?

A change may be felt in the outer genital skin or nearby tissue. It may look like a raised area, thickened patch, sore, or swelling that does not settle. A lump or swelling does not by itself identify the cause: cysts, infections, skin conditions, and irritation can also produce changes in this area.

A clinician can examine the vulva and nearby groin, discuss when the change began, and decide whether a closer look or a small tissue sample is needed. This assessment distinguishes between possible causes rather than relying on appearance alone.

Arrange a medical appointment for a new, enlarging, persistent, or recurrent change. Before the visit, note its location, whether it has changed in size or surface, and symptoms such as itching, pain, bleeding, discharge, or discomfort when passing urine.

Avoid squeezing, cutting, or using harsh products on the area. Gentle washing and loose clothing may reduce irritation while you wait for assessment, but they do not replace an examination.

Seek urgent medical care if swelling is rapidly increasing, pain is severe, bleeding is heavy, you have fever with a painful swollen area, or you cannot pass urine normally. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for a sore or lump that is not healing.

You could ask what features of the change need examination, whether the groin lymph nodes should be checked, and what test would clarify the cause. Ask when you should return if the area changes before your planned follow-up.
