How common is neck lump in lymphoma?

Lymphoma can enlarge lymph nodes in the neck. The swelling may feel firm or rubbery and may be painless, but its texture alone cannot identify the cause. Infection, inflammation, thyroid changes, and other benign conditions can also produce a lump. A clinician considers how long it has been present, whether it is changing, and whether there are other symptoms.

Arrange a medical assessment for a neck lump that persists, grows, or has no clear explanation. The visit may include an examination of the neck, throat, and nearby areas. Depending on the findings, a clinician may suggest imaging or a sample of the lump. Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage it, because this can irritate the area and make changes harder to judge.

Seek urgent help if the swelling causes trouble breathing, swallowing, or speaking, or if it is accompanied by severe weakness or rapidly worsening symptoms. Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent lump with night sweats, unexplained weight loss, fever, or widespread swelling. These features need assessment; they do not establish lymphoma on their own.

Ask what features of the lump are reassuring or concerning, whether you need an ultrasound or other test, and how soon results should be reviewed. You can also ask which changes should prompt an earlier appointment and whether medicines or a recent infection could affect the examination.
