How common is a neck lump in head and neck cancer?

Head and neck cancers can begin in areas such as the mouth, throat, voice box, nose, or nearby tissues. Cancer cells may travel to lymph nodes, creating a lump in the side or front of the neck. The lump may cause no pain and may be noticed before symptoms at the original site. Sore throat, hoarseness, mouth changes, ear pain, swallowing difficulty, or unexplained weight loss may occur as well. Infection and other benign conditions remain possible causes.

Book a medical assessment for a neck lump that lasts, grows, feels firm, or has no obvious short-lived cause. Describe its location, tenderness, movement, and any change in size. Mention tobacco or alcohol use, dental symptoms, recent infections, voice changes, mouth sores, and swallowing problems. A clinician may examine the mouth, throat, ears, and neck, then recommend imaging or a needle sample.

Seek prompt care for a persistent or enlarging lump, particularly when it comes with hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, a mouth sore that does not heal, ear pain, or weight loss. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, choking, inability to swallow fluids, or rapidly worsening swelling. Do not use pain as a guide, because some important neck lumps cause no pain.

Ask what structures may be causing the lump, whether the mouth and throat need specialist examination, and whether imaging or tissue sampling is appropriate. Ask when results are expected and which changes should prompt earlier contact.
