How common is discoloured nails in bruised nail?

A bruised nail, also called a subungual haematoma, often follows a trapped finger, dropped object, tight footwear, or repeated impact. The area may throb at first, and the colour usually remains beneath the nail plate. As the nail grows, the mark may move toward the tip rather than staying fixed at the base.

The pattern is not the same as every dark nail. A clinician may check for a nail-bed injury or a fracture when pain, swelling, or deformity is present. An unexplained or changing dark mark also deserves examination.

Protect the finger or toe from further pressure, keep the nail clean, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods soon after an injury. Do not puncture, drill, or burn the nail yourself. A healthcare professional can decide whether drainage or imaging is appropriate, particularly when pain is intense or the injury was substantial.

Once the injury settles, the discoloured area may travel outward with nail growth. A loose nail should not be pulled away; cover it lightly if it catches on clothing.

Get prompt advice for severe or worsening pain, marked swelling, numbness, reduced movement, an open wound, or a nail that is lifted or split. Arrange review when a dark streak appears without injury, widens, or does not move outward as the nail grows.

Ask whether the injury may involve the nail bed or bone, whether drainage is useful, and how to protect the nail during healing. Ask what changes would suggest infection or require another examination.
