How common is discoloured nails in nail psoriasis?

Nail psoriasis may affect the nail plate, the nail bed, or the growth area beneath the cuticle. Other clues include small pits, grooves, thickening, crumbling, or lifting from the bed. Skin plaques or joint symptoms can provide useful context, but nail psoriasis may occur without obvious skin findings.

Fungal infection can look similar, and both problems can occur together. A clinician may inspect the nails, skin, and joints and may test nail material when the diagnosis is not clear. The colour itself cannot identify the cause.

Book a review if the discolouration lasts, affects several nails, or comes with pits, lifting, or tenderness. Protect nails from picking and biting, keep them comfortably short, and use gloves for prolonged contact with water or cleaning products. Tell the clinician about scalp or skin rashes, morning joint stiffness, or swelling.

Care is chosen according to the nail areas involved and any skin or joint disease. Nail changes can remain visible while new nail grows, so progress is judged over time.

Seek prompt care for marked pain, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, or sudden nail lifting. A new dark band, rapidly changing pigment, or colour extending onto nearby skin also needs timely assessment, especially when it affects one nail without a clear injury.

Ask whether the pattern is more consistent with psoriasis, fungus, trauma, or a combination; whether testing is needed; and whether joint or skin symptoms change the treatment plan. Ask how to reduce splitting and when the nail should be reassessed.
