How common are muscle aches in malaria?

Malaria is an infection passed through the bite of certain mosquitoes in places where it occurs. The illness can feel like a severe flu-like episode, with generalized aches rather than a local muscle injury. Symptoms may come and go, and a person can become unwell after returning from travel. Body aches do not establish the cause, but fever with recent travel to a malaria area needs prompt medical assessment.

If you have fever or feel acutely unwell after travel to an area where malaria occurs, contact a medical service urgently and mention the travel location and dates. Rest and drink fluids while arranging care, but do not rely on pain medicine to judge whether the illness is improving. A blood test is used to check for malaria, and treatment depends on the type of infection and how unwell you are.

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, collapse, confusion, seizures, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, repeated vomiting, or inability to drink. Urgent assessment is also needed for fever after travel to a malaria-risk area, even when muscle aches are the main discomfort at first.
