How common is loss of smell in common cold?

During a cold, smell may fade alongside a blocked or runny nose. Food can seem bland because much of flavour comes from aroma. The change often improves as nasal swelling settles, although the timing differs between people. A cold-related loss of smell does not by itself establish the cause, particularly when symptoms are unusual or persist after the other cold symptoms have eased.

Rest, drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration, and keep the air around you comfortable. Saline drops or a saline rinse may loosen mucus; follow the product directions and use safe water for rinsing. Avoid putting strong substances inside the nose. If you use a pharmacy decongestant, check that it is suitable for you and follow its label.

Speak with a clinician if smell does not start to return after the cold has settled, if it repeatedly disappears, or if you develop significant facial pain or breathing difficulty. Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, confusion, blue or grey lips, dehydration, or a sudden smell change after a head injury.

Ask how long your symptoms fit a cold, whether another cause should be considered, and which nasal treatments are safe with your medicines or health conditions. Mention any change in taste, fever, facial pain or exposure to illness.
