How common is loss of smell in allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis causes inflammation inside the nose after exposure to triggers such as pollen, dust mites, mould, or animal dander. Swelling and mucus can narrow the airflow that carries scent molecules to the smell receptors. Congestion may make food seem less flavoursome because smell contributes strongly to flavour.

Smell often changes along with sneezing, an itchy nose, a runny nose, or blocked nasal breathing. The symptom is not specific to allergy: viral infections, nasal polyps, sinus disease, medicines, smoking, and head injury can also affect smell. The timing and accompanying symptoms help guide assessment.

Reduce exposure to your known triggers where practical, and consider a medical review if congestion or reduced smell continues. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on saline rinsing and suitable allergy treatment, including how to use a nasal spray correctly. Avoid inserting cotton buds or other objects into the nose, and do not use decongestant sprays for longer than directed.

Seek urgent help after a head injury if you develop confusion, weakness, severe headache, or fluid leaking from the nose.
