How common is light sensitivity in a foreign body in the eye?

A particle under the eyelid or on the eye surface may cause watering, blinking, redness, a gritty sensation, and discomfort in bright light.

The eye reacts to a foreign object by producing tears and closing the lids. Light sensitivity can continue if the surface has been scratched, even after the particle comes out. Persistent discomfort may therefore need an examination to check for a retained fragment or a corneal abrasion, particularly after metal, glass, or high-speed work.

Wash your hands, avoid rubbing, and rinse the eye gently with clean lukewarm water or sterile saline. Let tears flush out a loose particle. Do not use tweezers, cotton buds, or fingers on the eye, and do not try to remove an object that is embedded. Remove contact lenses and avoid driving if vision is unclear.

Get urgent medical help if an object is stuck, the eye was hit at speed, vision changes, pain is severe, or light sensitivity remains after rinsing. A chemical splash needs immediate prolonged irrigation followed by urgent assessment. Seek prompt care for increasing redness, discharge, or inability to open the eye.

Tell the clinician what entered the eye, how fast it was moving, and what you tried to remove it. Ask whether the cornea is scratched, whether protective treatment is needed, and when it is safe to resume contact lenses, screen work, or other close-up activities.
