How common is knee swelling in knee bursitis?

Bursae are small fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction around the knee. Repeated kneeling, pressure, a knock, or inflammation can irritate one and produce a soft or tender swelling. Prepatellar bursitis often appears over the kneecap, while other bursae can cause swelling at the inner or back part of the knee. Bursitis usually affects the tissues around the joint, although pain and stiffness can make the whole knee feel involved. Location, warmth, and movement help guide assessment.

Limit kneeling and direct pressure, and use padding if your tasks require time close to the floor. Rest from movements that aggravate the area, elevate the leg when comfortable, and try a wrapped cold pack for short periods. Do not puncture or drain the swelling yourself. A clinician can assess whether infection is present and discuss drainage or other treatment when appropriate.

Arrange prompt care if the swelling is hot, red, rapidly enlarging, very painful, or accompanied by fever or feeling unwell. Seek assessment after a significant injury or if walking becomes difficult. A clinician should also review swelling that does not settle, keeps returning, or begins without an obvious cause.

Ask which bursa appears affected, whether infection or another knee problem needs checking, and how long to avoid kneeling. Discuss protective padding, safe exercises, pain relief, and the signs that mean you need a quicker review.
