How common is knee swelling in gout?

Gout happens when urate crystals trigger inflammation inside a joint. In the knee, this can cause visible swelling, warmth, redness, tenderness, and pain with movement. A flare can begin suddenly and may make even light contact uncomfortable. Knee swelling has several possible causes, including infection and other inflammatory conditions, so the pattern and examination matter. A joint fluid test may sometimes help distinguish gout from infection or another crystal problem.

Rest the knee in a comfortable position and avoid putting extra pressure on it. A wrapped cold pack used briefly may reduce discomfort; protect the skin from direct contact with ice. Take gout medicine only as prescribed, and do not start, stop, or change long-term treatment without medical guidance. Arrange review if this is a first episode, the diagnosis is uncertain, or flares keep returning.

Seek urgent assessment for a hot, red, very swollen knee with fever, chills, feeling faint, or rapidly worsening pain. Infection in a joint can damage it and can look similar to gout. Prompt care is also needed if you cannot bear weight, the knee was injured, or treatment is not easing the flare as expected.
